Rich in mind, yet poor - Harare Sunday Mail, 01 May 2011

140 kilometres from the city of Kwekwe lies a "poor" town called Gokwe yet pregnant with young people full of rich entreprenuerial ideas that could change not only their lives but also their communities.

Fascinating is the volume of traffic in and out of Gokwe. Vehicles belonging to almost every known non-governmental organisation in Zimbabwe are a common sight in Gokwe. What makes the town so popular with NGOs?

Every year millions of US dollars in donor funding is ploughed into various humanitarian projects in Gokwe with little attention to economically empowering the communities in self-help projects.

This article was published in the The Harare Sunday Mail, an independent publishing company reporting from an ILO project site in Gokwe South.
